CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- The Prince Edward Island Government, Tourism PEI and the Charlottetown Airport Authority are pleased to announce that getting to Prince Edward Island by air is about to become a lot easier, thanks to a new flight offered by Northwest Airlines. Beginning July 1, a direct flight will leave Detroit every day at 5:15 p.m., arriving in Charlottetown at 9:08 p.m. This new seasonal non-stop is an excellent addition to the range of connections currently available to Islanders and visitors.
"We are very pleased with the addition of this Northwest Airlines non-stop," said Premier Pat Binns. "The flight will greatly improve access to Charlottetown for both the U.S. and Japanese travellers, something we have been very anxious to achieve. We expect the economic impact of this increased traffic to be significant."
Northwest Airlines now flies to 14 Canadian cities. Tom Bach, Vice-president of Market Planning and Airlink said, "The new service will provide a convenient way to reach the pastoral scenery, sandy beaches and relaxing pace of Prince Edward Island, one of Canada's leading tourism destinations." Bach went on to say, "In fact, this new service is timed to connect with any of our four daily flights between Detroit and Japan and 14 other destinations throughout the Asia-Pacific region."
The new service will be operated with Northwest Airlink partner Pinnacle Airlines Corporation's Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ), which seats up to 50 passengers.
"What a great way to start the year — this is excellent news for our Airport and for the Province of PEI," said Cliff Campbell, chairman of the Charlottetown Airport Authority. "I am very pleased that Northwest has demonstrated the confidence and recognizes the demand by adding PEI to its schedule of Canadian cities. Northwest Airlines currently serves only one other Atlantic Canadian destination; by choosing to add Charlottetown, Northwest Airlines is acknowledging our ability to attract international travellers. We know that U.S. and Asian travellers want to come to PEI and this new service will meet their requirements."
Northwest is the fourth-largest airline in the world and connections through their hub in Detroit link to more than 160 cities. The Northwest flight out of Charlottetown will leave at a convenient 8:15 a.m., arriving in Detroit at 10:38 a.m., which should prove excellent for making connections to other U.S. and international destinations.
