For Immediate Release - February 23, 2009
Ian Hurst, incoming President and CEO, Rodd Hotels & Resorts
Monday, February 23, 2009, Charlottetown. Today, in front a large group of tourism industry operators, at the flagship Rodd Charlottetown Hotel, Mark Rodd, representing the Rodd family, owners of Rodd Hotels & Resorts, announced that the Rodd family has decided not to sell the business.
"Last year we publicly announced that we were putting the business up for sale. As you may appreciate, that decision was a difficult one for everyone concerned. Anytime you put a business up for sale; it is unsettling for the owners, the management and the staff. It created some uncertainty" said Rodd.
"We have gone through the sale process, carefully weighed our options and although we have had some serious discussions with potential purchasers, we have ultimately made the decision to keep the business. So today I am here to advise that Rodd Hotels & Resorts is no longer for sale." said Rodd.
"The family will be keeping the business, investing in people, the properties and will be working to grow and improve the business that my Grandparents started and my Father built." added Rodd. The second announcement Mark Rodd made was in relation to the position of company President and CEO.
"When my Father's health started to deteriorate, he asked his trusted employee and friend John Cudmore to take on the top job. Although it was a position John never sought, he agreed to take the position of President and COO out of loyalty to my Father. Since my Father's passing, in 2006, John Cudmore has been the glue that has held the family business together and for that my family owes him a debt of gratitude. Throughout this time, he indicated to me his desire to hand over the reins at an appropriate time. Now with our decision to keep the business, John and the family have decided that now is an appropriate time to make that transition. We are glad that John has offered to stay on for a period of time to ensure the transition goes smoothly," noted Rodd.
"Given John's decision; we have hired a new President and CEO. I am very happy to announce today that this person is Mr. Ian Hurst." noted Rodd.
Ian Hurst is no stranger to Prince Edward Island. Mr. Hurst, in the 1990's was the General Manager, of the C.P. Prince Edward Hotel, which is now the Delta Prince Edward.
"I am very excited about the future of Rodd Hotels & Resorts and with Ian's leadership, vision and plans, I am confident that we will maintain and enhance our position as a leading company within the Island and Maritime tourism industry," added Rodd.
"The hiring of Mr. Ian Hurst, as President and CEO, is a very important milestone for the company. With a person of the caliber, experience and depth of Ian we are indicating to our customers and the tourism industry that we are serious, keenly re-focused and fully committed to providing passionate, personalized and first class service in our leading Maritime hotels and resorts" concluded Rodd.
"I am honored and enthused at the opportunity to lead Rodd Hotels and Resorts" added Ian Hurst. "From humble beginnings in 1935, the Rodd name and properties has since become a beacon for travelers around the world that are visiting the Maritimes," said Hurst.
"Rodd Hotels & Resorts are market leaders and I look forward to helping the organization move forward and achieve new goals. We are going to look at expansion in key markets like Halifax and Fredericton and look at strategies to bring new corporate business and a stronger focus to the resorts – the crown jewels of the business," said Hurst.
Ian Hurst is a 30 year veteran of the hotel business. He set his sights on a hotel career in his early teens. He attended Ryerson Polytechnical University in Toronto graduating from the Hospitality Management program in 1979.
