Charlottetown, PEI - April 16, 2012
Habitat for Humanity PEI announced today that thanks to a contribution by Rodd Hotels & Resorts, Shayna Conway's family will get their new home.
Mark Rodd, CEO of Rodd Hotels & Resorts, has made a corporate commitment to lead an effort to raise the funds that are necessary so a planned Habitat for Humanity home for the family of Shayna Conway won't be delayed. Due to challenges finding donated land as a construction site, Habitat for Humanity organizers were concerned that the $16,000 to $31,000 land cost would have to come out of the construction budget or the project would have to be delayed.
"We are very pleased to have Mark Rodd, the Rodd family, and the Rodd Hotels & Resorts employees to partner with Habitat for Humanity PEI in the construction of the Wade home," said Mario Zambonin of Habitat for Humanity PEI. "With the support of Rodd Hotels & Resorts, Habitat for Humanity PEI will be able to complete the 'Rodd House for Shayna and Family'."
Conway is the lone survivor of a tragic murder-suicide in Lethbridge, Alberta last December that claimed the lives of three of her friends. She has returned home to recuperate from serious wounds she received in the incident.
Her mother, Sheri Wade, had applied before the tragedy to be a Habitat for Humanity homeowner and was one of four individuals chosen to partner with Habitat for Humanity PEI for 2012. The Habitat for Humanity program assists low-income families to become homeowners by providing an interest-free mortgage and construction assistance. Family, friends and other volunteers contribute 500 volunteer hours towards the planning and construction of a home. Conway and Conway's brother and sister will be living in the home with their mother and the house would be designed to accommodate any of her accessibility and mobility needs.
"This is the right thing to do," said Mark Rodd. "This family has been through more than its share of hardship and we know we can help. We have 600 employees and a network of suppliers and customers who will be very glad to contribute to this worthwhile project."
"This story of Shayna and her as well as her family's courage and tenacity has really moved us. Our staff is excited at the prospects of helping to get this new home started and finished," added Rodd.
